A Program Created to Kick Start the Energy Saving Process for Homes and Businesses

Green or energy efficient lighting often conjures up images of awful compact fluorescent bulbs and big boxy ceiling fixtures that make your home or workplace look and feel awful. Sure you want to save money on energy and help the environment but the thought of living or working in such an unfriendly lighting environment often seems like too big a sacrifice. Especially when you consider how much lighting can effect your mood and productivity.

The good news is that green or energy efficient lighting does not have to be like that anymore. There have been, and continue to be, so many advancements that you can now have good and even great lighting and still save money and help the environment.

Below is a list of just a few of the advances in green lighting:

Compact fluorescents can be good lighting. There are a variety of color temperatures (the color of “white” light) available to suit anyone’s taste. The days of cold, sterile lighting with flickering and buzzing are over.

Fluorescent lights can now be dimmed using special controls.

• Fluorescent lamps generally last six to ten times as long as their incandescent counterparts.

• Incandescent light (regular old light bulbs) can be dimmed. Dimming your lights 10% saves you 10% of the electricity and makes the bulbs last twice as long. Dimming your lights 50% saves you 40% of the electricity and makes the bulbs last 20 times as long.

Incandescent dimmers are inexpensive, easy to install, and come in many styles for any aesthetic you may need for your home or workplace. Most people will be able to install wall-box dimers themselves.

• Some controls can be automatic, so the lights can turn themselves off if a room isn’t being used. The settings are adjustable so you don’t have to worry about the lights turning off while you are in the room anymore. Older controls used to be annoying but the manufacturer’s have all developed better products.

Daylight and sunlight can be an important aspect to you lighting and energy usage approach. You have to be careful, since sunlight can also add to your home’s heat load, but with thoughtful design the outdoors can light your indoors.
